Christmas, also known as 'Natal' in Portuguese, commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and is a major cultural and religious observance in Portugal, celebrated every year on December 25th.

In Portugal, December 25th is recognized as a public holiday, leading to widespread closures of businesses and government offices throughout the country.

For Christians, Christmas signifies hope and salvation, reinforcing core tenets of the faith.

Christmas Eve on December 24th is marked by a traditional 'Ceia de Natal' (Christmas Eve dinner), often featuring dishes like roast turkey, codfish ('bacalhau'), or octopus.

Following dinner, some attend Midnight Mass, known locally as 'Missa do Galo'.

Christmas Day itself is dedicated to family reunions, the exchange of gifts, and continuing festive meals, with homes often adorned with nativity scenes ('Presépios') and Christmas trees.
