Hijri New Year's Day
Islamic New Year, or Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of Muharram and the start of a new Islamic lunar year.
About Hijri New Year's Day
Islamic New Year, also known as Hijri New Year or Awal Muharram, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar year. It falls on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Hijri calendar. Because the Hijri year is shorter than the Gregorian year, the date shifts earlier each Gregorian year.
Significance
The Islamic New Year is significant as the start of a new Hijri year and as a reminder of the Hijra, the migration associated with the early Muslim community. It is generally more reflective in character than the two Eid holidays. Its changing Gregorian date reflects the lunar structure of the Islamic calendar.
